The familiar sight of crazy teenagers teasing, flirting, texting and shouting in the yellow buses while they commute to and from school will soon become a passé, thanks to the experiments carried out by the school officials in Vail, Arizona. The officials have taken an initiative to provide internet access to the students by mounting an internet router inside the bus and thereby allowing them to surf the net.
Referred to as the Internet Bus, the Wi-Fi access has greatly reduced the behavioral problems and converted the ride into a roaming study hall. The driver of the bus J.J. Johnson agreed that the move has made a huge difference in the overall behavior of both boys and girls and seemed to have changed the morning routines drastically in the bus.
The Internet bus has also become very popular among the students who can now take care of their unfinished tasks outside their classrooms. There have been talks to allow students of other districts who are on long bus routes to make use of the internet bus. Autonet Mobile, the marketing company of the router has confirmed selling them to many schools and districts.
The Internet bus is intended to increase the academic performance of the students by extending the learning beyond the walls of the classrooms. The idea of the Internet bus was the brainchild of Matt Federoff who is the chief information officer of the Vail district. Although, some students may access some forms of entertainment but officials feel it is much better than bugging each other.
